YouTube is not a website that needs too many features. However, if you have mastered the basic features such as playback, resolution, speed, subtitles and playlists, congratulations on using YouTube well.
But YouTube is even better if you discover some hidden features and tips when using it. Make sure one of these features will be useful whether you’re a video creator or a viewer.
New features have mostly been added by YouTube in the last year or two, but you may not be aware of their existence. Let’s explore the top 9 features of YouTube with Ola City through the following article.
1. Dark Mode
In April 2017, YouTube-savvy users discovered a hidden feature called Dark Mode, which turns the YouTube interface from white to black. Dark interface modes and dark themes are often appreciated as the new Dark Mode in Windows 10 because they make the user’s eyes more pleasant to look at for a long time.
But for YouTube, this mode is even more amazing as it offers a very cinematic experience. In May 2017, YouTube took this hidden feature out of its “hiding place” and you can now use it without any strange browsers.
To turn on dark mode on YouTube, do the following:
- Turn on the new YouTube interface.
- Click your profile icon at the top right of the screen.
- Click on Dark Theme > Activate Dark Theme.
2. Big screen interface
The big screen interface isn’t a new feature as it was introduced in 2012 as YouTube Leanback, but it doesn’t seem like many people are aware of the feature so it can also be considered a new feature. If you watch YouTube on a large screen or touchscreen, this interface is optimized for you.
To use the large screen interface, you visit the www.youtube.com/tv. You’ll find it simple, easier to navigate, and generally easy to use. And if you pair a device with your YouTube account, you can use it as a kind of remote control for retirement.
3. Double Tap
When streaming YouTube from a smartphone to a TV, the process is generally quite smooth but a back-and-forth search on a video is always annoying, until the Double Tap feature is added.
If you use the latest version of the YouTube app for Android and iOS, you can double tap the left side of the video to rewind the previous 10 seconds and tap twice to the right to fast-forward 10 seconds later.
4. Turn videos to GIFs
YouTube understands that GIF is the language of the web. It’s one thing to share videos with others and share a GIF with featured content. That’s why now YouTube makes it easy to convert any video into a GIF with just one click.
Currently, it only works for videos where the creator has allowed gifs to be created. And while you might think this is just a feature for members, GIFs actually come in handy more than just memes.
5. Live Stream
YouTube offers two ways to live stream content on the web: YouTube Live has been around for a few years, and YouTube Gaming was launched in 2015. The latter competes with Twitch and can be a fun way to make money while playing games, but YouTube Live has a better feature.
Any verified channel can stream, as long as the channel is not flagged as a restricted streaming mode. However, in February 2017, YouTube added the convenient ability to stream from the Mobile YouTube app (but only for channels with at least 1000 subscribers). If you want to view content online, simply visit www.youtube.com/live to see the real duration of all current online streams.
6. YouTube TV
YouTube is not only an address for watching entertaining videos but has become a full content streaming service. While YouTube Red exists to stream original YouTube content, YouTube TV is used to stream ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW and 40 other cable channels.
It’s not a free service and could be a big step toward eliminating cable TV. If you like on-demand content, you should know that YouTube TV teeth have their own DVR feature with unlimited memory.
7. YouTube community
In November 2016, YouTube opened a new way to interact with its audience, the Community tab. Now, video creators have a way to upload posts, photos, and other videos to a separate feed, and viewers can comment and debate each content.
Not all channels take advantage of this feature, only some notable channels such as AsapSCIENCE and Sam Tsui. This could be YouTube’s next step to becoming a real social network, not just a place where videos are stored. At least it gives you another way to interact with your favorite channels.
8. YouTube Creator Academy
Want to create a hit YouTube channel? Or are you trying to make your YouTube channel popular after years of activity? Then you should go to YouTube Creator Academy right away.
It’s YouTube’s official channel to help new content creators. You’ll find all the tips, tricks, interviews, and get inspiration from successful YouTubers. You don’t need to watch all the videos but it’s a pity to skip this amazing resource.
9. YouTube Kids
While YouTube has limited modes, it’s still not good enough to create a kid-friendly channel. However, in 2013, YouTube launched a separate android and iOS app for kids called YouTube Kids. It’s a playground for kids where parents don’t need to worry about violent or sensitive content.
You have every control over the app depending on how restrictive you want (such as disabling a search or setting up a timer to limit how long kids spend using the app). YouTube Kids also has a lock mode to prevent children from switching to other apps such as YouTube Kids for iOS, YouTube Kids for Android.
Now you know 9 good and unique features of YouTube in the article above. Ola City hopes that these features will contribute to your great experiences on YouTube in a more efficient and convenient way.
